| Traversing the Canning Stock Route is considered to be one of the most difficult 4WD treks that can be undertaken in Australia and is unforgiving for anyone not adequately prepared. Travelling along the CSR should not be attempted unless travellers have had extensive outback travel experience. This is an extremely remote area and there are almost no facilities available for the entire 1,800 km length. All travellers must be entirely self sufficient in term.... | A Code Of Conduct exists to ensure the environment is protected and all activities and undertaken safely. All land adjacent to the Canning Stock Route Reserve between Well 5 and Well 40 has been granted to the Martu people under the Native Title Act, 1993, and is now restricted access land. If you wish to leave the actual CSR vehicular track, a permit is required. Some sites are actually located within the Stock Route Reserve, .... | History on the area | |
| The Canning Stock Route was created by Albert Canning, who was chosen to survey a route for Kimberley cattlemen to take their stock to the southern markets at a time when cattle tick issues prevented the use of other transport methods. From 1906 to 1907, Canning conducted a full survey from north to south and then came back in 1908 to 1910 with a team to sink the 51 wells along the 1850km between Halls Creek and Wiluna.
