What  is CGC?

It’s an interactive dataset of information collected by 4WDers for fellow 4WDers. Using an Australia-wide zoomable map as its base, camp sites, treks, lookouts, rest areas etc of interest to 4WDers are plotted and colour-coded so they can be viewed from very broad to detailed scales. Each site has its own page with detailed information on location, facilities, access etc.

The concept is straightforward

You don’t have to be an IT guru to operate CGC. Intuitive is the word. Use it at home to plan trips and access the many weblinks provided to get additional information. Take it with you on your laptop in case your plans change or if you decide to look at a few other sites along the way. External links will need an internet connection to access them. The other links are internal to the DVD and will work off-line.

Background to CGC

Fed up with carrying multiple books, pamphlets and maps, which are not always reliable on location, access and other info, members of the Land Rover Club of the ACT (LRC) decided to develop their own dataset based on visits to every site, using a standard template for collecting information. The focus for the first release in 2006 was southeast NSW – our backyard. This release has seen the data set double in size, further demonstrating the potential for CGC to grow into a national touring resource for 4WDers and caravaners.

New features of the 2010 version include:

  • 1080 sites including over 600 camping places
  • Coverage extended to all states and territories

GeoScience Australia is the source of the base map data; the map data files are in OziExplorer format and we incorporate OziExplorer GPS data. This edition of CGC was made possible by the work of CGC was conceived and developed by Roger Quarterman, Mike Osborne,  Graeme Pigram, Pete Smith, Stewart Needham and Paul Sheahan. We are indebted to John Greig for the carefully researched article “Heading Outback”. Many club colleagues and friends helped collect site and trek information and they are acknowledged on the info pages for the sites they visited. This product utilises Adobe SVG TM.

The way forward

4WDers have collected all this information and you can help us make it grow. If you visit any of the sites in CGC and the information needs updating – or if you are visiting a new site you think should be included – there are two possibilities. Either you can download the latest versions of excel or msword forms from the LRC website (CGC is most easily updated from the excel file), or you can fill in the msword Recce Form on this DVD, and then submit it to us when you get home. This will enable us to keep the information up-to-date and release regular updates with more useful site and trek information to assist you with your future 4WDing!
