Convoy Procedure

The following standard procedures apply to club trips when travelling in convoy and are applicable from departing the initial meeting point until final convoy dispersal.

  • Each driver is individually responsible for the safety of his/her own vehicle and passengers.
  • The Trip Leader will specify the UHF radio channel to be used during the trip (normally channel 10). Any change of channel is at the discretion of the Trip Leader.
  • No driver is to drive in a manner that may endanger themselves or others.
  • At intersections where the route to be taken may not be obvious, each driver is to wait at the intersection until satisfied that the following driver has identified the proper route.
  • Each driver is to maintain contact, preferably visual contact, with the vehicle immediately behind.
  • Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, particularly after driving through water. Nevertheless, avoid falling back too far, as this slows the entire convoy.
  • When negotiating hazards such as steep grades, wait until the vehicle in front has negotiated the hazard before proceeding.
  • After negotiating a hazard, wait at a safe distance until the following vehicle has also negotiated the hazard.
  • Leave gates as you find them. The lead driver is to report gates as either open or closed as they are encountered. Unless directed otherwise, the tail vehicle has responsibility for any necessary gate closures.
  • Drivers are to maintain their designated position in the convoy and change position only with the permission of the Trip Leader.
  • Any driver leaving the convoy must notify the Trip Leader.
  • On main highways sufficient distance is to be maintained between vehicles to allow other road users to overtake.
  • The Trip Leader is to ensure that all drivers are made aware of any changes to the briefed route.
  • The Trip Leader may modify these procedures to meet prevailing circumstances, whilst ensuring that all members of the convoy are briefed accordingly.
